I have been looking into Pancreatic Cancer and have learnt that it is a hidden killer as it remains undetected often until it has reached a condition where there is little that can be done. Recently published statistics show that in 2014 there were 9,618 cases and of these there were 8,817 deaths.
I have also learnt that many people do not really know what their pancreas does!
Your pancreas is a vital glandular organ in the digestive system. In humans, it is located in the abdominal cavity behind the stomach. It produces several important hormones, including insulin all of which circulate in the blood. It is also a digestive organ, secreting pancreatic juice containing bicarbonate to neutralize acidity of the stomach, as well as various digestive enzymes, which help to further break down the carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.
A worrying new report reveals that a third of adults would not be worried if they suffered from key symptoms of the disease. The most common being pain around the upper abdomen, spreading to the back. According to the NHS, the pain may come and go at first, and is often worse when you lie down or after you’ve eaten. If that is not enough my research shows that other symptoms may be unexpected weight loss, jaundice, pale-coloured stools or dark urine.
Once discovered treatments may include surgery to remove their tumour or chemotherapy may be given to slow tumour growth and manage symptoms and may be combined with other treatments such as radiotherapy.
However given the death ratio, this person says look out for those symptoms and go straight to your doctor as early as you can because any doctor will tell you us men often present cancer far too late!
